Relevance Revisited

چکیده

Relevance has been well-accepted notion in the field of Information Retrieval (IR) for measuring the effectiveness of IR systems. It seems a natural choice because a typical IR system always tries to find the information that is relevant to the user’s information needs. However, this notion of relevance is not well-understood at times. Most of the IR systems use precision, recall, or some similar measure to evaluate the relevance and claim that they are able to find more relevant information due to the higher values of these measures. But the question is, do these measures that are meant for evaluating the effectiveness of the system or the algorithm, adequately reflect the relevance from the user point of view? In order to investigate this question I revisited the notion of relevance as given in the literature of various fields. It turns out that more than often we disregard the user’s point of view regarding relevance and use the relevance as measured by the systems as the selling point.

Communication Strategies Revisited: Looking beyond Interactional and Psycholinguistic Perspectives

Second language (L2) communication strategies (CSs) have traditionally been dealt with through either interactional or psychological perspectives. However, this paper is a critical attempt to question the status of the particular kinds of psycholinguistic and interactional approaches that currently dominate the field of second language acquisition (SLA). In this way, it expands the significance...

Non-linear response of molecular junctions: The polaron model revisited

A polaron model proposed as a possible mechanism for nonlinear conductance [Galperin M, Ratner M A, and Nitzan A 2005 Nano Lett. 5 125-30] is revisited with focus on the differences between the weak and strong molecule-lead coupling cases. Within the one-molecular level model we present an approximate expression for the electronic Green function corresponding to inelastic transport case, which ...

Superluminal signals: an engineer’s perspective

Recent experiments with evanescent waveguide modes demonstrated the existence of superluminal group velocities. The still ongoing debate concerning the definition of an appropriate signal velocity is revisited, and a case study of a raised cosine signal is presented to investigate the practical relevance of superluminal signals.  2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Management Accounting Theory Revisited: Seeking to Increase Research Relevance

Management accounting research has recently been suffering, as its relevance is being seriously questioned. For academic research output to be relevant it should gain scholars' attention and have an impact upon practice, and should address groups with interests beyond the managerial elite. For this a theoretical approach needs to be adopted that addresses the various societal elements that orga...
